Maurice Burgess
Maurice Burgess, choral director at East Edisto Middle School, serves as a lead teacher for secondary choral music in the district and is a faculty member for the district gifted and talented program. His current and prior choirs are consistent Superior with Distinction and Superior ensembles that have made appearances with professional orchestras, professional choirs, and have been conducted at both the high school and middle school level as invited SCMEA Conference performers. He is the 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year for Gregg Middle School where the 6th grade select choir was featured with Charleston Symphony Orchestra and Taylor Festival Choir. Maurice has made both operatic and concert appearances in the Carolinas and has been a recitalist in Graz, Austria. He has been seen on the operatic and musical theatre stage as well as appearing as a soloist in oratorio and major works by Bach and Handel including singing Evangelist and arias in Bach Christmas Oratorio with TFC in 2022. He currently serves as President of SCMEA Choral Division, is a founding board member of GIA Publications' Servant Leadership Association for Music board, and is an active clinician for choirs and bands at state, regional, and national events.
