Stephen Michael Hanna
Stephen Hanna, bass-baritone and East Texas native, currently makes his home in Cincinnati, Ohio and enjoys a professional career having performed with Cincinnati Opera, Queen City Opera, Roundabout Opera for Kids, Vocal Arts Ensemble, Santa Fe Desert Chorale, St. Rose of Lima Dectet, Breath Collective, Taylor Festival Choir, Collegium Cincinnati, Ensemble Con Fuoco, Coro Volante, Bach Ensemble at St. Thomas, and in numerous other venues for oratorio, recital, and presenting masterclasses. Noted operatic roles include Schaunard in La bohème, Zuniga in Carmen, Baron Zeta in The Merry Widow, and Bartolo in Il barbiere di Siviglia. Equally at home on the concert stage, Stephen has featured in Five Mystical Songs, as Jesus in Bach’s Saint Matthew Passion, as Jesus in Charles Woods’s Saint Mark Passion, Messiah, Ein Deutches Requiem, Durufle’s Requiem, Haydn’s Creation, the premiere of Kile Smith’s Canticle, and Craig Hella Johnson’s Considering Matthew Shepard.
He continues to be an avid supporter of new music and can regularly be seen and heard performing and recording new choral and chamber works, song cycles, and operas by living composers. With a growing importance for singer representation, Stephen sits on the Board of Directors for the Taylor Music Group in Charleston, South Carolina, and acts as their Chorus Manager and Liaison as well as serving on artistic, marketing, and logistics committees. He is additionally an AGMA delegate for Cincinnati Opera and, consultant to other music organizations advocating on behalf of singers’ rights, pay, and fair treatment. When not onstage, he spends his time as a professional photographer, backpacker, and whiskey specialist.
